Taking the idea of green roofs further, the city of Zhuzhou in Hunan,
China decided to build on top of a shopping mall covered with a lush
living roof and 4 villas.
According to China Daily, the houses erected atop Jiutian
International Square mall will play the role of offices for workers of
the mall's real estate developer.
It would be interesting to note that green roofs are used to lessen
the impacts of the urban heat island effect, which is currently the
issue of many cities. The foliage on rooftops helps cool urban areas
that are usually hotter than rural regions.
It is worth mentioning that Zhuzhou is inventing a lot of resources
to make its infrastructure greener. The five-story shopping mall has 4
two-story houses located at opposite corners of the roof and measuring
500 square meters.
Zhuzhou Jiutian Real Estate is the company that designed the houses
so they would look like villas. The firm used modern designs and
landscape decorations to achieve the goal.
