Blood Clots: Vaginal Rings and Patches Have Higher Risk than the Pill

Women, using birth control methods, such as vaginal rings and skin patches, have higher risk of developing blood clots than those, who use contraceptive pill, scientists say.

The study conducted by scientists at the University of Copenhagen used the data of 1,6 million women. The analysis showed that women, who did not use birth control methods, had 2 in 10,000 risk of having blood clots annually. For those, who chose the contraceptive pill, the risk was estimated as 6 in 10,000. This number increased to 7.8 in 10,000 for those, using vaginal rings and 9.7 in 10,000 for skin patches users.

Specialists say that it is important to inform women about the risk of blood clots and help them make their choice. One of the most popular birth control methods is contraceptive pill. Still many women find it hard to remember to take the Pill every day at the same time. They opt for vaginal ring or skin patch.

In case you are concerned about the risk, you need to consult the doctor to find.
